How we use “games” to teach kids jiu jitsu — and why it works!

  • At Precision Submission Grappling, we create an environment where kids learn Jiu Jitsu and have fun at the same time.

  • Our kids' programs use carefully designed "games" that are more than just play—they are structured learning experiences built on fundamental skill development through a constraints-led approach to learning.

Kids Jiu Jitsu Classes in Des Moines: Building Skills, Confidence, and Friendships in a Safe and challenging Environment

At Precision Submission Grappling, our kids Jiu Jitsu program is designed to help children direct their focus and develop problem-solving skills through clear, structured guidance. We provide a training environment where young students can become adaptable learners, capable of handling various grappling scenarios with confidence. By offering specific tasks and challenges, we help kids build both mental and physical resilience, preparing them for success in martial arts and beyond.

Our program emphasizes the fundamental skills of Jiu Jitsu and wrestling in a safe, welcoming environment that encourages personal growth. Children explore new movements and develop unique motor skills that enhance their overall athleticism. Through task-based "games" that are both fun and educational, they learn essential martial arts skills while staying engaged and excited about training. This approach not only builds practical skills but also instills a love for the sport.

Beyond skill development, our kids Jiu Jitsu classes offer the chance to form lasting friendships with peers who share similar interests. Training together fosters a sense of camaraderie and teamwork, creating a supportive community. This combination of social connection and expert instruction ensures that children not only improve their physical abilities but also build confidence and meaningful relationships as they progress.

Gi vs nogi jiu jitsu training for kids

No-Gi Jiu Jitsu, unlike traditional Gi-based Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, is practiced without the kimono or gi. Instead, students wear form-fitting gear like rash guards and shorts, which removes the reliance on grips typically used to control an opponent's clothing. This leads to a faster, more fluid style of grappling, emphasizing agility, body control, and technique. Kids who train in No-Gi Jiu Jitsu develop a heightened sense of timing, positioning, and leverage, as they must control their opponents through movement and precision rather than fabric grips.

At Precision Submission Grappling, we exclusively focus on No-Gi training for kids, allowing them to master a dynamic and fast-paced style of grappling. This approach teaches children to rely on body mechanics and submission skills, developing athleticism and problem-solving abilities. Our No-Gi program prepares young practitioners for both competition and real-life self-defense scenarios, making it a fun and practical way to learn the art of Jiu Jitsu from an early age.

How We Use Belt Promotions to Reward Your Child's Progress and Keep Them Motivated!

At Precision Submission Grappling, we believe in recognizing each child's dedication and growth. Although our students do not wear belts in regular classes, they still follow the traditional Brazilian Jiu Jitsu belt structure, which serves as a benchmark for their progress.

Promotions are earned based on a student's ability to apply skills during live grappling scenarios, solve problems in dynamic situations, and demonstrate a strong understanding of the core concepts we teach. This ensures that belt promotions reflect each student's true development and skill level, rather than simply attendance or time on the mats.

While the belts mark important milestones, our primary focus remains on a No-Gi training environment. Belt promotions are celebrated during special events rather than during everyday classes, keeping students centered on improving their skills, athleticism, and mindset.

Promotions are meant to recognize hard work, dedication, and growth—not to serve as a comparison to others. Our goal is to help each child foster a love for Jiu Jitsu, stay motivated through clear goals, and develop a lifelong commitment to learning and personal improvement.

A Message from Precision’s head Coach Jordan peitzman:

As your child’s coach, I will treat them as an individual with unique dreams and aspirations. My approach will be tailored to their specific goals and needs, ensuring the development of both their skills and character. I will provide them with the tools they need to thrive—not only on the mats but also in their everyday lives. Together, we will nurture their talents, cultivate their confidence, and celebrate their achievements.

I will support your child as they build the confidence to face any challenges. I will guide them toward becoming a resilient and determined individual, helping them understand the value of perseverance, overcoming fears, and believing in their dreams. Together, we will explore and develop the strength they possess to navigate obstacles and rise above any limitations they may feel.

I will also encourage them to advocate not only for themselves but for others who may need support. Through this journey, they will develop empathy and compassion, recognizing the positive impact they can have on the lives of those around them.

I look forward to coaching your child and earning your trust.
